White Noise

Having a baby changes everything, including car rides. The first four weeks of Lincoln’s life, he slept during every car ride. Somewhere around the four week mark, he decided that he didn’t really care for the car anymore. And how did he choose to express his dislike of this? By screaming his head off, of course. The ten minute ride home from Target started feeling like ten hours. And the 30 minute ride home from church? Forget it. Miserable. So I did what any good 21st century mom does and went to the Internet for answers.

I sometimes visit a mommy message board online, because well, hundreds of women go there and help each other out with the pressing issues that mommyhood brings. One user suggested a white noise album from iTunes to play in the car. Desperate for some peace & quiet, I went and downloaded Relaxing White Noise – Nature Sounds for Baby Sleep. I honestly assumed that I was wasting my time & money, but figured it was worth a try. I promptly put the album on my iPod and waited for our next trip in the car.

Mike & I had to run some errands that afternoon so we loaded Lincoln up. Just as we expected, the wailing began. I started the first track, Rain. Nothing. The wailing continued. I went to track number two, Sea Waves, and here’s how that went:

Waaaaaaaa, Waaaaaaaaa, Waaaaaaaaaaa. *Cue the waves*

Waaa, waa, wa………*Silence*

Mike & I looked at each other. No way, I said. It’s gotta be a coincidence. We enjoyed the rest of our ride in peace and just assumed we had caught a random lucky break that day. The next car ride comes.

Waaaaaaaa, Waaaaaaaaa, Waaaaaaaaaaa. *Cue the waves*

Waaa, waa, wa………*Silence*

It works. Lincoln apparently loves the sound of the ocean. That was the best $6.99 I have ever spent. ITunes saved my life or at least my ears. It’s actually almost creepy how quickly he stops crying when he hears the sounds. We joke that it’s kind of bizarre how much he loves the wave sounds and we’re hoping this doesn’t mean that he’s going to grow up to be all zen and become a yoga instructor or something. Hopefully it means he’ll love the beach or be a surfer. Anything but a yoga instructor. Whatever the case, I’m extremely thankful for the white noise/ocean waves sound. The only downside? I constantly feel like I have to pee.

And here I am playing with Photobooth on my Macbook trying to get a photo of the two of us. This mission was basically unsuccessful as you can see.
